Our Lady Derzhavnaya — the Queen of Heaven on a high throne with the Christ Child; the richest in colour of this icon series.

What the picture shows

The Mother of God sits on a carved throne, crowned and dressed in red and purple, a sceptre in her right hand. On her lap the Christ Child, in red garments, raises his hand in blessing. Both haloes are gold with a fine radiating pattern. Behind them rises an architectural setting of arches, small columns and crosses, with lamps to the left and right. A blue cloth falls from the folds of the throne below, rendered in broad cobalt patches. The ground is a warm golden ochre. A wide mosaic border of blue, red, white and gold circles runs around the edge. The beadwork here is nearly complete: beads cover almost the whole field — robes, throne, architecture, ground and border — and only the faces and hands remain printed.
