Jesus Christ — a half-length image of the Saviour with an open book and a hand raised in blessing; a classical icon type on a gold ground.

What the picture shows

Christ is shown almost frontally, with long chestnut hair and a short beard, his gaze directed straight at the viewer. His right hand is raised in blessing, his left holds an open book with text. The tunic is deep red, the himation a saturated blue with clear pale folds. A large cruciform halo surrounds his head, with a separate letter in each of its three arms. Above, in round medallions, are the traditional abbreviations of his name. The ground is entirely gold with an embossed plant pattern, and a narrow terracotta strip with fine geometric ornament runs along the edge. The beadwork is partial: beads cover the halo, the robes, the ground and the border, while the face, hands, hair and the text on the pages of the book remain printed on the canvas.
