«Icon „Protection of the Blessed Virgin“» shows the Mother of God spreading a veil above the faithful in a broad, symmetrical composition.

What the picture shows

She stands with arms outstretched, holding a long veil that falls in folds on either side. Her robe is a warm rose-red with ochre bands and pearl trim, and a headcloth edged in red covers her hair. The halo is large, worked in concentric rings of ochre, gold and white pearl circles. The veil is patterned with bands of pale blue, white and gold and finished with fringes. Blue vertical folds show beneath it at the bottom. The ground is pale blue with a printed white foliate pattern. Russet ornamental panels with crosses and flowers fill the corners, and an inscribed plaque runs along the bottom. Coverage is partial — the figure, veil, halo and corner panels are beaded, while the pale blue ground with its white scrollwork stays printed on the canvas.
