Icon of the Mother of God «Reigning» — the Mother of God enthroned in royal robes with the Christ Child on her lap; a solemn image, yet without excess splendour.

What the picture shows

The Mother of God is seated frontally, wearing a tall crown set with coloured stones and a purple-red robe. In her right hand she holds a long sceptre, her left supports the Child. The Christ Child, in light garments, raises his hand in blessing, with a golden orb and cross beside him. Both heads are ringed with haloes of small golden beads. Above, among the clouds, God the Father blesses from a blue radiance, while the ground behind the throne is a pale sky. A wide dark-red border runs around the edge, filled with a dense gold-and-red plant ornament and corner rosettes. A cartouche with an inscription sits at the bottom. The beadwork is partial: beads cover the crown, the robes, the throne, the haloes and the whole ornamental border, while the faces, hands, sky and clouds remain printed on the canvas.
