What the picture shows

The Mother of God draws the Christ Child close; their heads touch and she looks straight out at the viewer. She wears a blue mantle with a warm golden lining over a red dress trimmed with amber at collar and cuffs. The Child, in a pale blue shirt with an amber sash, has his arm around her neck. Both heads are uncovered, the hair painted in warm light-brown tones. Behind them large concentric halo arcs run in green, yellow and amber across a pale blue ground. A blue-and-yellow border with foliate ornament frames the panel, with a light inscribed plaque at the bottom. Coverage here is full — beads go on the figures, the ground and the whole border alike.
