«Icon of the Mother of God „Merciful“» shows the Mother of God holding the Christ Child, with an unrolled scroll and dense gold ornament all around.

What the picture shows

The Mother of God is seated, the Christ Child on her left arm; their heads lean together and both faces are calm. She wears a crimson maphorion with a green collar, the Child a light-blue shirt with white sleeves. Both are crowned — hers a tall crown set with red and green stones. The haloes are built from concentric rings of ochre, gold and green, backed by a wide semicircle of radiance. On the left the Child holds an open scroll with lettering. The ground is golden yellow, and a dense border of multicoloured geometric ornament runs around the whole panel, with a narrow inscribed plaque along the bottom. Coverage is partial — beads fill the figures, haloes, scroll and border ornament, while the gold ground stays printed.
