“Icon of the Mother of God ‘Refreshing and Refuge’” — the Mother of God with the Child, her head inclined towards him and her hand raised to her face.

What the picture shows

The Mother of God is shown at half length, her head gently inclined towards the Child and her right hand raised to her cheek — the very gesture that gives the icon its name. A jewelled diadem shows beneath the maphorion, which is deep red with a gold edge over a blue robe. The Child sits on her left arm in a green garment of broad folds, fair-haired and with a gold halo of his own, turned towards his Mother. The halos are large, built from concentric rings of gold and ochre, and they fill almost the whole upper field. The frame is wide, a fine repeating ornament in brown and gold, with a cartouche and inscription below. The beading is dense: beads cover the figures, the garments, the halos, the background and the frame, while the faces and hands stay printed.
