What the picture shows

The Mother of God is shown at half length in a blue maphorion with a fine gold edge, a diadem of pearls and jewels on her head. Her right hand holds a spray of white lilies with green leaves — the very unfading blossom that gives the icon its name. The Child sits at the right in a white garment with blue shadows, his right hand raised in blessing and a rounded object in his left; a red cushion shows beneath him. Both halos are gold with a fine radiating pattern, and the traditional monograms are set about the field. The frame is wide and blue-and-gold, with geometric ornament and a band of lettering above and a cartouche below. The beading is dense: beads cover the figures, the garments, the flowers, the halos, the background and the frame; the faces and hands are left printed.
