Description

“St. Zoe” is a martyr in a pearl veil and a dark red gown.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, almost frontally, her look calm and level. A white-pearl veil covers her head and shoulders, worked in pale beads in fine folds with an even band across the brow. The gown is dark red, falling to the lower edge in broad vertical folds. Both hands are lowered and brought slightly together in front of her. The halo is gold with a fine rim; the ground is cream with an embossed scroll. The composition rests on two colours — pearl and cherry — and it is that simplicity that makes the piece look balanced. The beads fill the veil, the gown and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
