What the picture shows

The lightest icon in the group in mood. Long chestnut hair falls freely over her shoulders, with no veil or crown. The clothing is plain: a white shift in fine folds, and over it a deep red mantle thrown across the right shoulder. Both hands are raised to her chest holding a cross — green with a gold centre. The halo is gold and broad, the ground cream with an embossed scroll and beaded fans above. White, red and green together make the composition read as high-contrast despite the small palette. The beads fill the shift, the mantle, the cross and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
