“St. Valery” is a young martyr in a blue mantle, with a cross and a small scroll.

What the picture shows

The figure is shown to the waist: fair wavy hair to the shoulders, a beardless face, the gaze aside. A deep blue mantle covers his shoulders, over a red tunic with pearl trim at the throat. In his right hand, lowered to the waist, is a gold cross on a slender shaft; in his left a small pale scroll. The halo is gold, the ground a warm cream with an embossed scroll and beaded fans above. Blue and red are split almost evenly here, so the composition reads as two vertical fields. The beads fill the mantle, the tunic, the cross and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
