“St. Valentine” is a martyr in a violet maphorion with a slim cross in her hand.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, turned slightly towards the viewer. A single violet-lilac maphorion covers her head and shoulders, the beads laid in large diagonal folds — it carries almost all the colour in the icon. A pale under-cloth shows at the throat. Her right hand is raised with a slim gold cross, her left holding the edge of the fabric. The halo is gold with a clear rim; the ground is cream with an embossed scroll and beaded fans above. The beads fill the maphorion, the cross and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
