“St. Vadim” is a grey-haired elder in a green cap, holding a prayer rope.

What the picture shows

The figure is shown to the waist, the face narrow, the beard long, white and parted into strands. A green skufia sits on his head — a rare colour for this series. A dark red mantle covers his shoulders, with a pale grey under-cassock in fine folds showing beneath. His left hand holds a prayer rope, his right is open palm outward. The halo is gold, the ground cream with an embossed scroll. The palette is warm and quiet: grey, dark red, the green of the cap and the gold of the halo. The beads fill the mantle, the under-cassock, the cap and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
