Description

“St. Timothy” is an apostle in a green sakkos, holding books.

What the picture shows

The figure is shown to the waist, with a short chestnut beard and a level gaze. The sakkos is green with gold edging at the sleeves; a white omophorion with large red crosses is laid over his shoulders. In his left hand he holds two books in blue bindings; his right is raised in blessing. The halo is gold and broad; the ground is cream with an embossed scroll and beaded fans in the upper corners. Green, white and red are divided into clear bands, so the vestments read as the main line of the composition. The beads fill the sakkos, the omophorion, the crosses, the bindings and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
