“St. Sophia” is a saint in a crimson maphorion over pale blue clothing.

What the picture shows

The figure is shown to the waist, the face calm, the gaze to one side. A deep crimson maphorion covers her head and shoulders, the beads laid in large diagonal folds; a pale blue gown with even vertical creases shows beneath. In her right hand, raised to her chest, is a slim gold cross. The halo is gold with a clear rim; the ground is cream with an embossed scroll and beaded fans in the upper corners. The scheme rests on two large fields — crimson and blue — with gold working only in the halo and the cross. The beads fill the maphorion, the gown, the cross and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
