Description

“St. Sergius” is a white-bearded monk giving a blessing in front of a monastery.

What the picture shows

The elder is shown to the waist: a long white beard, a high forehead, deep lines. His dress is monastic — a dark green cassock with wide sleeves under a darker mantle. His right hand is raised in blessing, his left holds a rolled scroll. Behind him, on either side, a monastery rises with green domes and white walls — a rare case in this series where the ground is not plain. The halo is gold, with a name plaque above. The beads fill the cassock, the mantle, the domes and the halo, while the face, the hands and the pale embossed ground stay printed on the canvas.
