Description

«St. Savely» (the icon reads: St Sava of Serbia) shows an archbishop with the Gospel: a blue chequered sakkos and a white omophorion with red crosses.

What the picture shows

The hierarch stands frontally, a red beard shot with grey lying on his chest. The sakkos is worked in blue beads with a fine light check — the densest pattern among the male icons in this batch. Over it lies a white-and-blue omophorion with large red crosses. His left hand holds a patterned bound Gospel, the right is raised in blessing. The halo is golden, with a beaded ornamental arch and name plaque above. Face, beard and hands remain printed on the canvas, as does the cream embossed ground — the beading is not solid.

The canvas shows at once where the beaded part ends and the print begins, so it is almost impossible to go wrong with the borders, even on a first beaded icon. Frames are chosen separately, from a narrow wooden one to a wide carved one.
