Description

«St. Rostislav» shows the holy prince in a red-and-white jewelled cap; the mantle with its dense gold pattern is the most decorative among the princely images here.

What the picture shows

The prince stands frontally, his fair beard closely trimmed. The cap is red with white edging and coloured stones. The crimson mantle carries a large gold plant pattern and falls in wide panels on both sides, blue dress with red-and-gold banding showing between them. His right hand holds a gold cross, the left is lowered. The halo is golden, with a beaded ornamental arch and the name cartouche above. Face, beard and hands remain printed on the canvas, as does the cream embossed ground — the beading is not solid.
