Description

“St. Pelagia” is a martyr in a blue head covering over a green gown, holding a cross.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, the face young, the gaze slightly aside. A blue veil with a beaded rim covers her head, and over it a darker blue mantle falls from her shoulders. Beneath the mantle is a green gown in even vertical folds — the largest field of colour in the icon. In her right hand, raised to her chest, is a gold cross. The halo is gold and broad; the ground is cream with an embossed scroll and beaded fans above. Blue with green is a restrained pairing in which the gold of the halo works as the single warm note. The beads fill the mantle, the veil, the gown, the cross and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
