“St. Paul” is an apostle with a raised hand and a scroll, in a green tunic.

What the picture shows

A male figure to the waist: a high forehead, a dark wedge-shaped beard, a concentrated look. The dress is the classic apostolic pair — a green tunic and a dark red mantle thrown over the left shoulder in large folds. His right hand is raised palm forward; in his left a pale scroll is held against his chest. The halo is gold and broad; the ground is a warm cream-ochre with an embossed scroll and beaded fans in the upper corners. The figure takes up almost the full height of the sheet, leaving only a narrow margin. The beads fill the tunic, the mantle, the scroll and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
