Description

«St. Orest» shows a young martyr with a cross; a green cloak over violet dress is a rare pairing in this series.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, in three-quarter view. His hair is thick and curly, his face young. A green cloak is thrown over his shoulder; beneath it violet dress with broad folds and a shoulder-piece embroidered in gold and red beads. His right hand holds a gold cross, the left is lowered. The halo is wide and golden, with a beaded ornamental arch and the name cartouche above. Face and hands remain printed on the canvas, and the cream embossed ground is not beaded over — the beading is not solid.
