“St. Nina” is a saint holding a cross made of grapevine in her raised hand.

What the picture shows

The distinguishing mark of this icon is the unusual cross: its arms droop downward and it is wound with a green vine bearing small leaves. The saint is shown to the waist, her dark hair covered by a pearl brow band with a blue rim. The mantle is a warm orange-gold — a rare colour in this series; beneath it is a red gown in dense folds. Her right hand is raised with the cross, her left lowered. The halo is gold, the ground cream with an embossed scroll. The beads fill the mantle, the gown, the brow band, the cross and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
