Description

«St. Moses» shows the prophet with a large open scroll; the Church Slavonic text takes up almost a quarter of the image.

What the picture shows

The prophet is shown to the waist, in three-quarter view. His hair and beard are curly and reddish-chestnut. A red himation is thrown over his shoulder, with blue-and-white under-dress in vertical folds beneath. In his right hand he holds an open scroll that runs down as a broad band, carrying fine Church Slavonic text. The halo is golden, with a beaded ornamental arch and the name cartouche above. Face, hands and the lettered scroll remain printed on the canvas — the beading is not solid, and the ground stays printed too.
