Description

«St. Matthew» shows the apostle and evangelist with a bound Gospel; this kit uses the fewest colours in the batch, and the image only gains by it.

What the picture shows

The apostle is shown to the waist, in three-quarter view. His hair and beard are white and wavy. A dark red himation is thrown over his shoulder, a green tunic beneath falling in a broad fold. His left hand holds a Gospel in a red binding with gold ornament, the right is raised to the chest with two fingers joined. The halo is golden, with a beaded ornamental arch and the name cartouche above. Face, beard and hands stay printed on the canvas, as does the cream embossed ground — the beading is not solid.
