Description

“St. Marina” is a martyr with loose hair, in a blue mantle and a patterned gown.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, long light-chestnut hair falling to her shoulders with no veil. A deep blue mantle covers her shoulders, and beneath it a dark red gown thick with gold pattern and a pink collar at the throat. In her right hand, raised to her chest, is a small gold cross; in her left, held low, a pale scroll. The halo is gold, the ground cream with an embossed scroll and beaded fans above. Most of the seventeen colours go into the pattern of the gown. The beads fill the mantle, the gown, the collar, the cross and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
