Description

“St. Margaret” is a great martyr in a dark maphorion, with a cross and an open scroll.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, the face young, the gaze lowered. A dark blue, almost black maphorion with a pale blue lining covers her head and shoulders — the darkest fabric in the group. Beneath it is a red gown in broad folds. In her right hand, raised to the shoulder, is a gold cross; in her left an open pale scroll with lines of Church Slavonic text. The halo is gold, the ground cream with an embossed scroll. The dark maphorion against the light ground makes the silhouette sharp and easy to recognise. The beads fill the maphorion, the gown, the cross and the halo, while the face, the hands, the lines of the scroll and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
