Description

“St. Lydia” is a martyr in a blue gown scattered with gold lilies, holding a cross-staff.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, her wavy chestnut hair covered by a white-and-blue beaded veil with a pearl border. The collar is gold and set with stones; the gown is blue, scattered with small gold lilies — a detail found in no other icon in this group. Over the gown lies a deep red mantle, with gold cuffs at the wrists. Her right hand holds a slim gold cross on a long shaft. The halo is gold, the ground cream with an embossed scroll. The beads fill the veil, the gown, the mantle, the collar, the cross and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
