Description

“St. Leonid” is a grey-bearded bishop in a violet vestment, holding a gospel book.

What the picture shows

The figure is shown to the waist, the face aged, the beard short and grey. The vestment is violet-lilac, covered with a fine wavy pattern and edged in gold; a pectoral cross hangs on a chain at his chest. In his left hand he holds a gospel book in a red binding with a large gold frame; his right is folded in blessing. The halo is gold, the ground cream with an embossed scroll and beaded fans in the upper corners. Violet carries most of the colour here, and the red binding gives the one sharp accent. The beads fill the vestment, the binding, the cross and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
