Description

«St.Leo» shows the hierarch in a violet phelonion; the white omophorion with black crosses gives the sharpest graphic contrast in the batch.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, frontally. His hair and short beard are reddish-chestnut. A wide white omophorion with large black crosses falls over his shoulders, and beneath it a phelonion of dense violet in soft folds. His left hand holds a Gospel in a red binding with gold crosses, the right is raised to the chest. The halo is golden, with a beaded ornamental arch and name plaque above. Face and hands remain printed on the canvas, as does the cream embossed ground — the beading is not solid.
