“St. Irene” is a young great martyr in a diadem set with a red stone, holding a tall cross.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, her long chestnut hair falling loose over her shoulders. A gold diadem with a red stone at its centre crowns her head, and a pearl-and-gold necklace circles her throat. The dress is simple in cut but saturated in colour — deep red with wide sleeves and a gold lining. Her right hand rests on her chest; in her left is a tall gold cross-staff set with green stones. Halo and ground are both light: the honey gold of the halo runs into a cream field with an embossed scroll. The beads fill the dress, the diadem, the cross and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
