Description

«St. Ioanna» shows the myrrh-bearer with a vessel in her hands; she is recognised by her tall patterned headdress.

What the picture shows

The saint stands almost frontally. On her head is a tall headdress worked in white and red with pearl drops — the most striking detail of the image. A red maphorion falls over her shoulders, a blue gown with gold trim showing beneath. She holds a small vessel of myrrh, her right palm raised. The halo is golden, with a beaded ornamental arch and the name cartouche above. Face and hands stay printed on the canvas, as does the light embossed ground — the beading is not solid.
