Description

“St. Helen” is an empress in a pearl crown, holding a golden vessel on a white cloth.

What the picture shows

The figure is shown to the waist and almost frontally. A tall crown of white pearl beads set with red stones sits on her head, with a white veil falling from under it. The dress is imperial: a crimson gown, a wide blue-and-white collar with square inserts, a gold band running down the front with green and red stones, a brooch at the throat. Both hands hold a round gold vessel resting on a white cloth. The halo is broad and gold; the ground is cream with a large embossed scroll. The beads fill the crown, the robes, the vessel and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
