Description

«St. Gregory» is a half-length image of the hierarch with a book: a white beard, a calm direct gaze and a warm ochre palette.

What the picture shows

The saint stands almost frontally, his head slightly turned. A wide white omophorion with brown-and-gold crosses falls over his shoulders; beneath it a phelonion shifts through terracotta, brick and ochre with a fine feathered pattern. His left hand holds a dark bound book, the right supports it. The halo is worked in several shades of golden bead, and above it runs a beaded arch of ornament with the name plaque. The face, beard and hands stay as print on the canvas — beading is not solid here, and the cream ground with its embossed scrollwork also remains printed.
