Description

“St. Galina” is a martyr in a pearl veil with a small cross in her hand.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, her head tilted slightly to one side. A white-pearl veil covers her head and shoulders, worked in pale beads in fine folds. Over it lies a red mantle, and beneath that a green gown showing at the throat and below. In her right hand, raised to her chest, is a small gold cross; her left holds the edge of the mantle. The halo is gold and broad; the ground is cream with an embossed foliate scroll. Three large fields of colour — pearl, red and green — carry the whole composition. The beads fill the veil, the mantle, the gown, the cross and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
