What the picture shows

One of the most colourful icons in the group. Long fair hair falls to her shoulders under a white-and-blue beaded headdress with a pearl rim. A string of pearls circles her neck, and below it a wide gold-and-red collar set with gems. The dress is green, scattered with a small red-and-white floral pattern, and over it lies a deep red mantle; a blue panel shows at the hip. Her right hand is pressed to her chest. The halo is gold, the ground cream with an embossed scroll. The beads fill the headdress, the dress, the mantle, the collar and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.

The vertical 230×300 mm sheet leaves a margin around the figure, so the work never looks crowded. It is easiest to start with the large colour fields of the clothing and leave the small accents — the crown, the cross, the border — until the hand is used to the size of the beads.
