Description

«St. Eudocia» shows the venerable martyr with a prayer rope; a green veil over a dark blue mantle is a rare combination in this series.

What the picture shows

The saint stands frontally, hands lowered and brought together before her. A green veil with gold edging covers her head, and over it a dark blue mantle falls in heavy vertical folds. Between her fingers she holds a long prayer rope that hangs almost to the bottom of the field. The halo is golden, with a beaded ornamental arch and the name cartouche above. The colours here are dense and dark. Face and hands remain printed on the canvas, as does the embossed ground — the beading is not solid.
