Description

«St. Edward» shows a young holy king in a gold crown; a beardless image, rare among the male icons in this series.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, almost frontally. A gold crown with small stones sits on his head; his hair is dark to the shoulders, his face young and beardless. A crimson cloak with a gold clasp is thrown over his shoulder, blue dress with broad folds and decorated cuffs beneath. His right hand holds a gold cross, the left is lowered. The halo is golden, with a beaded ornamental arch and the name cartouche above. Face and hands remain printed on the canvas, as does the cream embossed ground — the beading is not solid.
