“St. Denis” is a monastic elder holding a model of a monastery church before him.

What the picture shows

The figure is shown to the waist in monastic dress: a black klobuk with a veil, a wide grey-black mantle in fine folds, green clothing showing beneath. The beard is long and white, the face severe, the eyes pale. His right hand is folded in blessing; in his left is a model church with red-and-white domes and a small cross on top. The halo is gold, the ground cream with a large embossed scroll. The icon is almost monochrome — grey, black and gold — with colour only in the church and a glimpse of green. The beads fill the mantle, the klobuk, the church and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.

The vertical 230×300 mm sheet leaves a margin around the figure, so the work never looks crowded. It is easiest to start with the large colour fields of the clothing and leave the small accents — the crown, the cross, the border — until the hand is used to the size of the beads. The moulding in the photograph is shown for reference only — it is not in the kit.
