“St. Basil” is a bishop in a dark cross-patterned phelonion, holding a gospel book.

What the picture shows

The figure is shown to the waist: a long wedge-shaped dark beard, a high forehead, a concentrated look. The dress is episcopal — a dark brown phelonion covered with a small cross pattern, and over it a turquoise-blue omophorion with a gold border. In his left hand he holds a gospel book in a blue-and-red binding; his right is raised in blessing. The halo is gold and broad; the ground is cream with an embossed scroll and beaded fans in the upper corners. Most of the colour mass here is dark, so the pale omophorion carries the composition. The beads fill the phelonion, the omophorion, the binding and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.

The vertical 230×300 mm format keeps the figure large and legible even from a distance. The canvas is dense, holds tension in a hoop and does not stretch under the weight of the beads, so the edges of the finished piece stay straight. The carved moulding in the photograph is not included: it is chosen separately after the embroidery is done.
