Description

“St. Artemy” is a warrior in patterned armour with a spear in his hand.

What the picture shows

The figure is shown to the waist, with dark hair, a short beard and a level gaze. The armour is worked in golden-brown beads with a small diamond pattern and applied plates across the chest. Over it hangs a dark violet cloak, with pink cloth showing at the belt. His right hand holds a long spear shaft raised vertically through the whole icon, his left is lowered. The halo is gold, the ground cream with an embossed scroll. Violet with gold is an unusual pairing for a warrior icon, and it sets this piece apart in the row. The beads fill the armour, the cloak, the shaft and the halo, while the face, the hands and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
