Description

“St. Anthony” is a desert elder with a long unrolled scroll.

What the picture shows

The figure is shown to the waist, the beard very long and white, the face lean, the gaze severe. The dress is monastic: an ochre-gold mantle in large folds over a dark, almost black under-cassock. Both hands hold an open pale scroll that falls nearly to the lower edge of the icon, carrying a Church Slavonic text in small lettering. The halo is gold, the ground a warm ochre-cream with an embossed scroll. There are only thirteen colours, and the whole palette rests on ochre, white and black. The beads fill the mantle, the under-cassock and the halo, while the face, the hands, the lines of the scroll and the ground stay printed on the canvas.
