What the picture shows

The cardinal sits in profile with its characteristic crest and a black mask around the beak; the plumage runs from deep cherry to bright red, which gives the breast its volume. The branch below it is hung with small red berries, with green needles and small drifts of snow beside them. The coffee canvas is left unstitched and works as a warm ground on which the red does not glare. Nineteen floss colours, 29 m. The crest and tail use the darkest shade and the breast the lightest, so the bird reads in the round.
