Description

“Watercolor viola” shows a bunch of garden violas glowing against a dark navy ground.

What the picture shows

The flowers are gathered in a dense group in the middle: large yellow and warm pink violas with dark centres and fine veining open at the front, pale lilac and blue petals show behind them, and a few buds bend downwards. Leaves and stems are worked in green with grey-blue and run into the background, where they gradually dissolve. The ground is not flat: blue, violet and green strokes are laid across the navy canvas, so the bunch seems to stand in twilight. Twenty floss colours give smooth watercolour transitions inside each petal, and forty-one metres of thread build a dense surface. The bunch is set into a circle and nearly touches its edges, so little plain ground is left.
