Description

“Spring” is a piece of spring lettering worked in gold and white on black canvas.

What the picture shows

The word HELLO is stitched at the top in tall block letters, and beneath it a wide handwritten Spring runs across the fabric with long flourishes that reach past the line. The script word is worked in golden yellow floss with ochre shading, the block word in clean white. Both lines are framed with thin twigs, narrow leaves and tiny stars, some white, some warm gold. There are only five colours, and the whole piece is carried by the contrast of light on black. The black Aida works as the background and is left unstitched — only the lettering and the leafy wreath around it are worked, so the drawing reads like chalk. The letters are packed rows of stitches, while the sprigs are single thin lines with black showing between them.
