Description

“Sleeping giraffe” shows a giraffe with a rainbow mane dozing among little clouds.

What the picture shows

The giraffe stands in profile, its long neck stretching through the full height of the circle: the body is worked in warm yellow with brown patches, the eyes are closed, and two small horns and two gold stars sit on its head. The mane is laid as a row of rounded locks in mint, pink, light blue, lilac and yellow, and it is the brightest part of the piece. A soft blue patch of sky with white clouds lies behind, and a clump of small flowers and grass grows under its feet. Twenty floss colours are split between the mane and the half-tones of the body. The white Aida is left unstitched around the edges, so the blue ground reads as a watercolour wash on a white sheet. The figure is upright and takes up almost the full height of the piece.
