“In gentle waves” shows two goldfish with long veil fins swimming towards each other.

What the picture shows

The upper fish is pale, with a turquoise and yellow back; the lower one is fiery orange and red. Both have full translucent tails worked in light stitches and silver metallic thread. Silvery curls of waves run around them across the black canvas, a blue band of water lies below, and small bubbles are worked in Preciosa beads. The black ground is left unstitched and gives the depth in which the fish seem lit. Seventeen floss colours, 31 m of thread. The scales are worked in short stitches of different shades, so they shift as the light moves.

A 150×150 mm piece, rated simple. Work on black is best finished under glass; hoop, frame and mount are not in the kit and are chosen separately. The silvery waves are best worked after the fish: the line is easier to keep going without breaking mid-curl. The bead bubbles are sewn on at the end, once the waves are in place.
