“Florist” shows a garden gnome with a long beard and an armful of poppies.

What the picture shows

The gnome nearly fills the frame: a tall striped cap in green and ochre with a curled tip covers half the circle, and only his nose and thick grey beard show beneath it. He holds red-orange poppies, another bunch stands in a wooden crate at his feet, and small flowers and grasses are scattered around. The white canvas is left open and works as a bright ground. Twenty floss colours, 33 m of thread. The curled tip of the cap narrows row by row — the trickiest part of the piece to count.
