Description

“Cup” shows a cup of coffee on a saucer inside a wreath of small garden flowers — a quiet morning scene.

What the picture shows

The composition is built as a circle. At the centre stands a pale porcelain cup with a thin handle on a wide saucer; the coffee is worked in warm brown with a milky swirl, and a small red heart of steam floats just above it. Pink and yellow blooms with yellow centres, tiny lilac buds and narrow dark green leaves spread around the cup; thin stems dotted with blossom close the wreath at the top, long pointed leaves at the bottom. Twenty floss colours go almost entirely into the flowers and the half-tones on the china. The light yellow Aida stays as the background: you stitch the drawing itself, not a solid square, so the piece keeps its airy look.
