“Color whirlwind” shows a hummingbird trailing a tail of coloured splashes.

What the picture shows

The bird hovers to the left of centre: a turquoise back, violet breast, long thin beak and wings blurred into small stitches. From it a whirl of yellow, crimson, blue and lilac specks flies up and to the right in an arc, thinning out towards the edges. The white canvas stays clean and works as the sheet on which that movement reads. Twenty floss colours over 34 m, with many isolated crosses. The specks sit densely near the bird and fly apart singly towards the edge — that is how the sense of movement appears.
