Velvet story is a bumblebee in black and gold: dark sequin wings and a grey fur pompom.

What the picture shows

There are four wings here and all of them are black: sequins are laid in rows on a sheer mesh, and a wide gold edging runs around each wing and holds its shape. The head is a pale grey fur pompom, the abdomen a long black one. The legs and antennae are strands of black beads and gold bugle beads spreading out in every direction, as on a real insect. There are only eight colours — black, graphite, grey and a few shades of gold — so the piece reads as evening rather than summer. The beads do not fill the whole area: the wings stay fabric, and the beadwork does its job along the edges and on the body.
